Being that my Wedding Anniversary just passed I’ve had Iron on the brain which is the 6 year Traditional gift. After our wedding, my husband and I thought it would be fun to follow the Traditional Anniversary Gift List . At the time, we weren’t realizing how difficult it would be. Throw a baby into the mix, and I will say that we did get off track a couple years but have been able to pull off a few great ones over the years. I’ll share those in some upcoming posts.
My husband came to me this year and said “Iron is the gift this year. I think we should pick something out for our home together.” Now what he was really saying was “I know I’ll pick something, my designer wife won’t like and I’ll be doomed for an eternity.” Yep probably so. I really like the idea of using the gift thing to collect items for our home. Items that have meaning and a story behind them are always better than just a “thing”. My butt doesn’t need candy…my allergies don’t need flowers…so yeah let’s do iron!
I’ve collected a few ideas to illustrate just how you can take the iron anniversary year and incorporate items into your home. Some are quite literal as an iron chandelier (you will see this in a client design in a few months), some create something to do, like roasting marshmallows around an iron fire pit. I also like to find items that aren’t so literal. If iron isn’t exactly your thing, you can do artwork of something iron, like a doorknocker. Go wine tasting! There are quite a few wineries with the word “iron” in their name. You can take photos on your trip and use them in your home.
Whichever way you go, it’s about the memory. Collecting items over time that have a story behind them…like your iron anniversary gift…is what makes a house a home.
